Pattern Hair Loss and Thinning

Overview

You notice it gradually, then all at once. Early intervention expands your treatment options.

Hair loss affects approximately 50% of men over age 50 and up to 50% of women during their lifetime. While not medically dangerous, it can significantly impact confidence and quality of life. Hair loss is most commonly driven by follicle miniaturization: genetically susceptible follicles progressively produce thinner, shorter, lighter hair until they stop producing visible hair entirely.

Once a follicle is permanently destroyed, no treatment can revive it. But follicles that are thinning or dormant can be strengthened and reactivated.

Who Is the Ideal Candidate

Who Is the Ideal Candidate

Treatment is most effective when started early. It is easier to maintain existing hair than to regrow hair that has been lost.

For women, early to moderate diffuse thinning responds most favorably. For men, pattern thinning in the crown, temples, or frontal area responds best when follicles are still active.

If hair loss is advanced and the scalp is smooth with no visible fine hair, regenerative treatments may have limited impact. Your clinician will give you an honest assessment of what is achievable for your specific stage.

Types

Androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair loss)

The most common cause. In men: receding hairline and crown thinning. In women: diffuse thinning over the crown with a preserved frontal hairline. Caused by genetic sensitivity to DHT (dihydrotestosterone, a hormone that shortens the hair growth cycle). Progressive without treatment.

Telogen effluvium

Diffuse shedding triggered by stress, illness, surgery, hormonal changes, or nutritional deficiency. Often reversible once the trigger is resolved.

Alopecia areata

Autoimmune-mediated patchy hair loss. Unpredictable course.

Traction alopecia

Hair loss from repeated tension on the follicles from tight hairstyles.

Scarring alopecias

Permanent hair loss with follicle destruction. Requires different clinical management and is not a candidate for regenerative treatment alone.

Treatment at ReNueva

Growth Factor Stimulation

PRP and PRF

Concentrated growth factors from your own blood are delivered to the scalp to stimulate dormant follicles, extend the active growth phase, and improve hair density and thickness. A typical protocol involves three to four initial treatments spaced four to six weeks apart, followed by maintenance every six to twelve months. PRF may offer longer-lasting stimulation due to its sustained growth factor release.

Exosome Therapy

Delivers concentrated growth factors and signaling proteins directly to the scalp. Being explored for its potential to support follicle signaling and improve the scalp environment. Can be used standalone or combined with PRP/PRF.

Targeted Scalp Delivery

Mesotherapy

Delivers therapeutic agents, vitamins, and bioactive compounds directly into the scalp through microinjections. Targets the layer where follicles reside, increasing local availability of active ingredients while minimizing systemic exposure. Can be combined with PRP/PRF to enhance outcomes.

ReNueva Cocktail

A proprietary hair regrowth formulation developed at ReNueva. A customized blend of growth factors, vitamins, peptides, and regenerative compounds delivered directly to the scalp. Can be administered standalone or layered with PRP, PRF, or exosome therapy as part of a comprehensive protocol.

What to Expect

Most patients notice reduced shedding within four to six weeks and visible improvement in density over three to six months. Full results may take six to twelve months. A series of treatments is typical, with maintenance sessions to sustain results.

Most patients return to work the same day or the next morning. There is no visible bandaging, no shaving required, and no restriction on wearing a hard hat or PPE afterward. Some treatments may involve mild scalp tenderness or redness lasting up to a day.

Clinical Insight

Assessment First

Hair restoration begins with identifying the underlying cause. Not all hair loss is genetic, and not all thinning should be treated the same way. Your consultation includes a scalp examination, medical history review, and evaluation of contributing factors such as hormonal status, thyroid function, nutritional deficiencies, and stress. Blood work may be recommended. If medical therapy such as minoxidil or finasteride is indicated, your clinician will prescribe or coordinate accordingly. In advanced cases where follicles are no longer viable, surgical hair transplantation may be discussed.

Clinical Insight

Combination therapy typically produces better results than any single treatment alone. Your clinician may recommend layering PRP or PRF with mesotherapy, exosome therapy, or the ReNueva Cocktail depending on your type and stage of hair loss. Treatment plans are individualized and adjusted over time based on response.

Non-surgical treatments require ongoing commitment. Hair loss may resume if treatment is stopped. The objective is meaningful, visible improvement in density and coverage, not complete restoration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can PRP regrow hair?

PRP and PRF can strengthen and reactivate thinning or dormant follicles. They cannot revive follicles that have been permanently destroyed, which is why early treatment is important.

How do I know if I am a good candidate?

The best candidates are in the thinning phase, not the completely bald phase. During consultation, your clinician will assess your stage of loss and give you a realistic picture of what is achievable.

Will anyone know I had treatment?

No. There is no visible bandaging, no shaving, and minimal downtime.

How soon will I see results?

Most patients notice reduced shedding within four to six weeks and visible density improvement over three to six months.

Is hair loss treatment different for men and women?

The underlying biology differs, so treatment is tailored accordingly. Both respond well to regenerative therapy.

Do I need to be on medication?

Not necessarily. Your clinician will assess whether medical therapy would complement regenerative treatment based on your type and stage.
