What Is EMSELLA® and How Does It Work?

EMSELLA® uses High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic (HIFEM) technology to stimulate the pelvic floor muscles through powerful, involuntary contractions. Each session induces approximately 11,000 supramaximal pelvic floor contractions, stimulating both muscle tissue and the associated nerve pathways including the sacral nerve roots.

This level of stimulation improves pelvic muscle strength, coordination, and neuromuscular control far beyond what is achievable with voluntary exercises alone. The treatment is completely non-invasive. No undressing is required.

Patients remain fully clothed and seated comfortably throughout the 28-minute session. EMSELLA® is cleared by Health Canada and the FDA for appropriate indications in women and men.

Conditions EMSELLA® Treats

EMSELLA® is used across a range of conditions where pelvic floor weakness, neuromuscular dysfunction, or structural changes play a contributing role. It is delivered as part of a physician-directed protocol and in many cases works most effectively when combined with complementary therapies.

Female Urinary Incontinence

Stress, urge, and mixed urinary incontinence are among the primary indications for EMSELLA®. Clinical studies report significant reduction in symptoms, with improvements maintained at follow-up and up to 75% reduction in pad usage reported by patients.

Male Urinary Incontinence

EMSELLA® is used for men experiencing incontinence from pelvic floor weakness, age-related changes, or post-prostatectomy recovery, helping rebuild the pelvic support system affected by surgery.

Pelvic Floor Weakness

Whether weakness resulted from childbirth, menopause, aging, or prior surgery, EMSELLA® delivers thousands of contractions per session to rebuild strength, endurance, and activation timing that exercises alone cannot reach.

Overactive Bladder

A stronger pelvic floor may help suppress premature bladder contractions and provide better structural support for bladder control, used alongside behavioral strategies and, where indicated, FREEDOM+ Command Stack.

Fecal Incontinence

EMSELLA® may improve continence in selected patients where muscular weakness is a significant contributor, by strengthening the pelvic floor foundation that supports bowel control.

Postpartum Pelvic Recovery

EMSELLA® may help restore muscle strength, improve bladder control, and enhance sensation following childbirth, as part of a broader postpartum rehabilitation protocol that may also include EMFEMME 360 and pelvic floor physiotherapy.

Perimenopause and Menopause

EMSELLA® is completely hormone-free, suitable for women who cannot or prefer not to use hormone therapy, including breast cancer survivors. Often combined with EMFEMME 360 to address both muscular and tissue components.

Intimate Wellness and Sexual Function

Restored pelvic floor strength frequently brings back sensation, comfort, and confidence in intimacy. EMSELLA® may also be considered for women whose low libido is connected to pelvic floor dysfunction or reduced sensation.

Chronic Pelvic Pain (Supportive Role)

In selected patients whose chronic pelvic pain involves pelvic floor dysfunction, EMSELLA® may support neuromuscular coordination and reduce dysfunctional muscle patterns. It works best here alongside pelvic floor physical therapy focused on relaxation and coordination.

Post-Cancer Pelvic Rehabilitation

EMSELLA® is completely hormone-free, and every plan is developed with your full oncology history reviewed first. Treatment is offered only after oncology clearance where appropriate.

What to Expect

The Session

Fully Clothed, 30 Minutes

You sit comfortably on the EMSELLA® chair in your normal clothes. No gowns, no needles, no internal devices. Most patients describe the sensation as a comfortable tingling or rhythmic lifting in the pelvic floor.

The Protocol

Six Sessions Over Three Weeks

A typical EMSELLA® protocol is six sessions scheduled twice a week. Your clinician may recommend additional sessions or combination therapy depending on symptom type and severity.

After Treatment

No Downtime

These are walk-in, walk-out treatments. There is no anesthesia, no recovery period, and you can return to normal activities immediately, including work, exercise, and daily routine.
